Superbugs ‘are all over– not just in hospitals’
POTENTIALLY fatal superbugs are not confined to hospitals but are now invading homes, schools and gyms, scientists claimed last night.
A report in New Scientist says the infections are now lurking “just about everywhere”.
Robert Daum, a paediatrician at the University of Chicago’s Children’s Hospital was one of the first to warn of “community MRSA” in 1998.
He told New Scientist, “Everywhere it has come it has stayed and it comes to more and more places every day.”
It is thought young people, gym users and those involved in contact sports or living in close proximity – such as in prison – are the most vulnerable to the infections.
Community MRSA is not thought to be simply an escapee from hospitals because it has certain distinguishing features and is actually more virulent.
It is however usually susceptible to certain antibiotics that no longer work on hospital MRSA, although experts believe this could soon change.
Robert Skov, head of the Danish Centre for Antimicrobials and Infection Control in Copenhagen, told the journal, “Once these community strains get into hospitals, I would be surprised if they don’t pick up more resistance determinants.”
Hospitals in Wales and England are already advised to screen people scheduled to undergo certain types of surgery for superbugs. But some doctors now want all patients, and possibly even people just visiting emergency rooms, to be screened for the infections as well.
Richard James, director of the centre for Healthcare Associated Infections in Nottingham, said this would save hospitals money in the long term.
But Dr Daum believes the infections are already too widespread in the US for screening to have any effect.
In Scandinavia, the battle against MRSA has already been taken to the community in a bid to halt the infection spreading, with nurses sent to people’s homes to treat carriers and educate them about hygiene.
Dr Skov said, “Every case of MRSA, regardless of whether it causes infection or is just colonisation, is a transmission possibility. That means we should fight MRSA in the community too. If you don’t then you will have a silent pool who are continuously spreading it to other people.”
Doctors also fear the increasing invulnerability of these superbug bacteria could put medicine back to how it was before the advent of antibiotics. This regression would mean humans once again becoming defenceless against common illnesses such as pneumonia, according to the article.

I've read that people in Japan live much longer than Americans do. If that's true, what's their secret?
It's true, but only in Okinawa, a Japanese island state. There, 34 people out of 100,000 live to be 100 or older. By contrast, in America 10 people per 100,000 make it to membership in the Willard Scott birthday club.
These centenarians' secret? Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle. Though genetics (which you can't change) may contribute to longevity, lifestyle factors (which you can change) can determine how well people age and even how long they live. As proof, consider this: Okinawans who migrate to other countries and abandon their lifestyle habits have higher mortality rates (especially from cardiovascular disease) than do those who remain in Okinawa. According to the Okinawan Centenarian Study, elder Okinawans have low rates of heart disease, obesity, dementia, and breast and prostate cancers. And they have the longest disability-free life expectancy in the world. To emulate their success, here are five secrets to longevity.
Eat Like an Okinawan Centenarian
The most vivid difference between the long-lived Okinawans and us is how--and what--they eat. Every day they eat seven or more servings of vegetables, including dark leafy greens, seaweed, onions, green peppers, bean sprouts, and sweet potatoes; seven or more servings of mostly whole grains; two to four servings of fruit; and two or more servings of soy foods. They also drink several cups of green tea daily. At least three times a week, they eat a serving of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
In addition, Okinawa's elders don't eat many dairy products or sweets, and they shun fast, processed, and junk foods. Men drink an average of two alcoholic drinks a day; women may have one--usually the distilled rice liquor Awamori.
Try to Hara Hachi Bu
Translation: "Eat until you are 80 percent full." The elders who practice this are lean, a trait that reduces the risk of chronic diseases. To practice hara hachi bu, try eating about half the portion you usually consume. Then wait 20 minutes--the time it takes for your brain to register that you're full. If you're still hungry, eat a little bit more and then stop. After a few days, you may realize that you can feel full on less food.
Stay Active
Okinawan centenarians regularly walk, garden, perform martial arts, and do traditional Okinawan dance.
Connect
Deep spirituality and powerful cultural beliefs are especially evident among the women centenarians (who outlive the men by 8 years). Okinawan women believe that their gods and ancestors watch over them; they pray to them for their health and that of their families. Their prayers are often meditative, and they might repeatedly murmur words like these:
I am one with the ancestors The ancestors are one with the gods The gods are one with the universe The universe is one with me
Be Taygay

Who Is Watching Over You?
I received this today and had to share, we all need someone to watch over us!
Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth's rite of passage?
His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him
alone.
He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the
blindfold until the rays of the morning’s sun, shine through it. He
cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a
MAN.
He cannot tell the other boys of this experience, because each lad must
come into manhood on his own.
The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild
beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him
harm. The wind blew the grass and earth, and shook his stump, but he sat
stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he
could become a man!
Finally, after a horrific night, the sun appeared and he removed his
blindfold. It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the
stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his
son from harm.
We, too, are never alone. Even when we don't know it, our Heavenly
Father is watching over us, sitting on the stump beside us. When trouble
comes, all we have to do is reach out to Him.

Labor Day, oops

Oh, that dreaded "DIET" word...
I hope you are not like me and need to worry about everything you put into your mouth adding 5 extra pounds!! I hate diets, I love to eat!! I started a Water Arobics Class at the Recreation Center and have meet loads of great people, haven't seemed to loose those pounds but I have heard muscle weighs more than fat...well that is something!! Well enough rambling...if you need some help with weight lose, get back with me, I have natural products

Make fitness a family affair. Take your kids or spouse on a walk after dinner. Round up the neighborhood kids for a spontaneous game of ball. There are plenty of things to do as a family that don't center around the television or the computer. Getting physical is a great way to bond. Not only are you spending quality time together, you're also burning calories in your spare time. Walking or horseplay with the kids for 20 minutes can burn 78 calories.

Most people don't know that back in 1912. Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York This would have been the largest single shipment delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery; were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning,which they still observe to this day.

"While we will consider all options to limit the spread of a pandemic virus, we recognize complete border closure would be difficult to enforce, present foreign affairs complications and have significant negative social and economic consequences," the 228-page draft report says.
Pandemics can strike when the easy-to-mutate influenza virus shifts to a strain that people have never experienced, something that has happened three times in the past century. The government is preparing for a worst-case scenario of up to 2 million deaths in the United States.
It's impossible to predict when the next pandemic will strike, or how great its toll might be. But concern is rising that the Asian bird flu, called the H5N1 strain, might lead to one if it eventually starts spreading easily from person to person.
So far, H5N1 has struck more than 200 people since 2003, killing about half of them. Virtually all the victims caught it from close contact with infected poultry or droppings.
The plan says preparedness for a pandemic could take years, and so significant steps must be taken immediately across all levels of government and the private sector to protect national security, the economy and the basic functioning of society.
The report aims to energize the private sector, noting that 85 percent of the systems that are vital to society, such as food production, medicine and financial services, are privately run.

So far, the stockpile contains enough vaccine for 4 million people and medication for 5 million.
This new report is Step 2, outlining how every branch of government would have to work together with federal health officials to try to contain a pandemic and minimize its damage to the economy and society. By early next month, government agencies are to release the specific steps they plan.
The report attempts to settle any turf battle within the administration, saying the Department of Health and Human Services would lead the government's interagency response effort and the Department of Homeland Security would have a secondary role to assist with the health response and non-medical support.
If a pandemic begins abroad, federal health officials are guaranteed to take certain initial steps, such as screening travelers arriving from affected areas and putting the possibly infected into quarantine. Ship and plane captains already are required to report certain on-board illnesses upon arrival, but crews would be trained to take such steps as putting a surgical mask on a coughing traveler.
Delaying the inevitable
With no border restrictions, pandemic influenza would arrive in the United States within two months of an outbreak abroad, the document estimates. But models of influenza's spread suggest that sealing the U.S. border would not only be impractical — 1.1 million people cross the nation's 317 official ports of entry daily — but it would only delay the inevitable by a few weeks, it says.
Domestically, Americans take an average of 1.1 billion trips a day — four for every person.

Tell US Forest Service our National Forests Are Not For Sale
The Bush administration’s FY 2007 budget request includes a proposal to sell up to 300,000 acres of National Forest land and use the revenues to phase out funding for rural schools over the next 5 years. While funding of rural schools is something we support, paying for it by selling off precious natural resources is misguided.
Such a land disposal plan has, as conservationist Aldo Leopold wrote in 1949, “the same desperate finality as having to chop up the furniture to keep warm." The land sale proposal would require Congress to adopt special legislation because the Forest Service currently has very limited legal authority to sell National Forest land.
Locking out the Public
If the legislation passes, it would eliminate virtually all formal opportunity for the public to comment on or object to proposed land sales, short of going to court. The sales would be exempt from environmental reviews unless there are “extraordinary circumstances” such as impacts on endangered species habitat.
Special Areas Could be Sold and Developed
Lands that are currently protected through forest management plans and regulations -- such as Inventoried Roadless Areas, old-growth forest reserves, riparian areas, streams, lakes, wetlands, campgrounds, big-game winter range, and endangered species habitats -- could be considered for sale.
Moreover, a purchaser of the land would be free to develop the land in whatever ways are allowed by local zoning and land use laws that apply to any private lands. Potentially that could include housing subdivisions, strip malls, gravel pits, and parking lots, as well as new mansions and driveways perched on scenic real estate.
Opposition Growing
Many Senators and Congressmen already have vowed to stop this legislation. Governors have spoken out against the idea and urged their Congressional delegations to take action. State legislatures in Colorado and Idaho, as well as counties all over the nation, have passed resolutions opposing it.
The newest voices in the chorus of opposition to this proposal are the four former Chiefs of the Forest Service who wrote a letter to current Chief Dale Bosworth urging him to abandon the misguided plan.

Such a land disposal plan has, as conservationist Aldo Leopold wrote in 1949, “the same desperate finality as having to chop up the furniture to keep warm." The land sale proposal would require Congress to adopt special legislation because the Forest Service currently has very limited legal authority to sell National Forest land.
Locking out the Public
If the legislation passes, it would eliminate virtually all formal opportunity for the public to comment on or object to proposed land sales, short of going to court. The sales would be exempt from environmental reviews unless there are “extraordinary circumstances” such as impacts on endangered species habitat.
Special Areas Could be Sold and Developed
Lands that are currently protected through forest management plans and regulations -- such as Inventoried Roadless Areas, old-growth forest reserves, riparian areas, streams, lakes, wetlands, campgrounds, big-game winter range, and endangered species habitats -- could be considered for sale.
Moreover, a purchaser of the land would be free to develop the land in whatever ways are allowed by local zoning and land use laws that apply to any private lands. Potentially that could include housing subdivisions, strip malls, gravel pits, and parking lots, as well as new mansions and driveways perched on scenic real estate.
Opposition Growing
Many Senators and Congressmen already have vowed to stop this legislation. Governors have spoken out against the idea and urged their Congressional delegations to take action. State legislatures in Colorado and Idaho, as well as counties all over the nation, have passed resolutions opposing it.
The newest voices in the chorus of opposition to this proposal are the four former Chiefs of the Forest Service who wrote a letter to current Chief Dale Bosworth urging him to abandon the misguided plan.

Did You Miss Me???
I received this today and had to pass it along!! Hope you enjoy, you can shop at my shop site on the sideboard!!
This makes a lot of sense ~ read to the end!!!
A man eats two eggs each morning for breakfast. When he goes to the grocery
store he pays .60 cents a dozen. Since a dozen eggs won't last a week he
normally buys two dozen at a time.
One day while buying eggs he notices that the price has risen to 72 cents.
The next time he buys groceries, eggs are .76 cents a dozen. When asked to
explain the price of eggs the store owner says, "the price has gone up and I
have to raise my price accordingly".
This store buys 100 dozen eggs a day. I checked around for a better price
and all the distributors have raised their prices. The distributors have
begun to buy from the huge egg farms. The small egg farms have been driven
out of business.
The huge egg farms sells 100,000 dozen eggs a day to distributors. With no
competition, they can set the price as they see fit. The distributors then
have to raise their prices to the grocery stores. And on and on and on. As
the man kept buying eggs the price kept going up. He saw the big egg trucks
delivering 100 dozen eggs each day. Nothing changed there.
He checked out the huge egg farms and found they were selling 100,000 dozen
eggs to the distributors daily. Nothing had changed but the price of eggs.
Then week before Thanksgiving the price of eggs shot up to $1.00 a dozen.
Again he asked the grocery owner why and was told, "cakes and baking for the
holiday". The huge egg farmers know there will be a lot of baking going on
and more eggs will be used. Hence, the price of eggs goes up. Expect the
same thing at Christmas and other times when family cooking, baking,
etc.happen.
This pattern continues until the price of eggs is 2.00 a dozen. The man
says,"there must be something we can do about the price of eggs".
He starts talking to all the people in his town and they decide to stop
buying eggs. This didn't work because everyone needed eggs. Finally, the man
suggested only buying what you need.
He ate 2 eggs a day. On the way
home from work he would stop at the grocery and buy two eggs. Everyone in
town started buying 2 or 3 eggs a day.
The grocery store owner began complaining that he had too many eggs in his
cooler. He told the distributor that he didn't need any eggs. Maybe wouldn't
need any all week.
The distributor had eggs piling up at his warehouse. He told the huge egg
farms that he didn't have any room for eggs would not need any for at least
two weeks.
At the egg farm, the chickens just kept on laying eggs.
To relieve the pressure, the huge egg farm told the distributor that they
could buy the eggs at a lower price. The distributor said, " I don't have
the room for the eggs even if they were free".
The distributor told the grocery store owner that he would lower the price
of the eggs if the store would start buying again. The grocery store owner
said, "I don't have room for more eggs. The customers are only b uy 2 or 3
eggs at a time". "Now if you were to drop the price of eggs back down to the
original price, the customers would start buying by the dozen again".
The distributors sent that proposal to the huge egg farmers. They liked the
price they were getting for their eggs but, them chickens just kept on
laying.
Finally, the egg farmers lowered the price of their eggs But only a few
cents. The customers still bought 2 or 3 eggs at a time. They said, "when
the price of eggs gets down to where it was before, we will start buying by
the dozen."
Slowly the price of eggs started dropping. The distributors had to slash
their prices to make room for the eggs coming from the egg farmers. The egg
farmers cut their prices because the distributors wouldn't buy at a higher
price than they were selling eggs for.
Anyway, they had full warehouses and wouldn't need eggs for quite a while.
And them chickens kept on laying.
Eventually, the egg fa rmers cut their prices because they were throwing
away eggs they couldn't sell. The distributors started buying again because
the eggs were priced to where the stores could afford to sell them at the
lower price.
And the customers starting buying by the dozen again.
Now, transpose this analogy to the gasoline industry.
What if everyone only bought $10.00 worth of gas each time they pulled to
the pump. The dealers tanks would stay semi full all the time. The dealers
wouldn't have room for the gas coming from the huge tank farms. The tank
farms wouldn't have room for the gas coming from the refining plants. And
the refining plants wouldn't have room for the oil being off loaded from the
huge tankers coming from the Middle East.
Just $10.00 each time you buy gas. Don't fill it up. You may have to stop
for gas twice a week but, the price should come down.
Think about it.
As an added note...When I buy $10.00 worth of gas,that leaves my tank a
little under half full. The way prices are jumping around, you can buy gas
for $2.65 a gallon and then the next morning it can be $2.15. If you have
your tank full of $2.65 gas you don't have room for the $2.15 gas. You might
not understand the economics of only buying two eggs at a time but, you
can't buy cheaper gas if your tank is full of the high priced stuff.
Also, don't buy anything else at the gas station, don't give them any more
of your hard earned money than what you spend on gas, until the prices come
down..

A Great Dog Story

A GREAT (True) DOG STORY
Anyone who has pets will really like this. You'll like it even if you don't and you may even decide you need one.

Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy.
Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box.
It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease....in fact, she was just sure it was fatal. She sheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders.
The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand that I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.
The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, whining and miserable.
Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap.
Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.
Later, when Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love.
Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day.
It's been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.
Remember....live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing from God. And never forget....the people who make a difference in our lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care for us.
Especially the four-legged ones!

Headed to Mexico??

Dear President Bush:
I'm about to plan a little trip with my family and extended family, and I
would like to ask you to assist me. I'm going to walk across the border
from the U.S. into Mexico, and I need to make a few arrangements. I know
you can help with this.
I plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration
quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do
here.
So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Vicente Fox, that I'm on
my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:
1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need,
whether I use them or not.
3. All government forms need to be printed in English.
4. I want my kids to be taught by English-speaking teachers.
5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my kids to see the American flag flying on the top of the flag
pole at their school with the Mexican flag flying lower down.
7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access
to government services.
9. I do not plan to have any car insurance, and I won't make any effort
to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from
Pres. Fox to leave me alone, please be sure that all police officers
speak English.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put flag decals on my
car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any
complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, and
don't enforce any labor laws or tax laws.
13. Please tell all the people in the country to be extremely nice and
never say a critical word about me, or about the strain I might place on
the economy.
I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things
for all the people who come to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that Pres.
Fox won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.
However, if he gives you any trouble, just invite him to go quail hunting
with your V.P.
